Importing Thai Supplements: A Guide for Wholesale Buyers

Importing Thai supplements and functional food is one of the more document-heavy categories in cross-border sourcing from Thailand, precisely because the products sit at the intersection of food regulation and health marketing. Wholesale buyers evaluating this category should expect more paperwork than for cosmetics or packaged snacks, and should build extra lead time into a first order for that reason.
Thai supplements and functional foods are typically sold in a handful of familiar retail formats: hard capsules and tablets in blister packs or bottles, powdered drink mixes in single-serve sachets, and ready-to-drink liquid shots or bottles. Many are formulated around collagen, herbal extracts, fiber, vitamins, or plant-based ingredients aimed at everyday wellness rather than a therapeutic outcome. Retail packaging is usually designed for the Thai domestic market first, which means language, unit of measure, and label layout will likely need to be adapted before the product can be sold under its intended positioning abroad.
Most Thai supplements and functional foods sold domestically carry a Thai Food and Drug Administration (Thai FDA, known locally as อย.) registration number, which is the local marketing authorization for that product inside Thailand. That number is a fact about how the product is sold at home; it does not automatically transfer to another country's market. Every destination market classifies and regulates these products differently, and some decide whether an item counts as a food, a supplement, or something requiring stricter drug-style approval. There is no single international standard buyers can rely on across markets.
Because of that variation, buyers typically need to gather a specific set of documents before an order can clear customs and reach shelves. Common requests include the product's ingredient and formulation list, a certificate of analysis or product specification sheet, the manufacturer's or brand owner's business registration, and confirmation of the product's existing Thai FDA registration status. Some destination authorities also ask for a certificate of free sale, confirming the product is legally sold in its country of origin. Which of these a specific shipment needs depends entirely on the importing country's own rules, so this list should be treated as a starting point for a conversation with the supplier, not a checklist guaranteed to satisfy any particular authority.
Shelf life is another practical detail worth confirming product by product. Capsules and tablets generally hold a longer shelf life than powdered sachets or liquid formats, and manufacturing and expiry dates are usually printed in the Thai calendar or a format that needs to be reconciled with the buyer's own labeling requirements. Buyers should also ask whether the supplier can support relabeling, translated ingredient panels, or nutrition information in the format their destination market expects, since Thai-language-only packaging is rarely accepted for retail sale outside Thailand.
A sourcing and export partner's practical job in this category is to help a buyer reach the right supplier, request the documents above in a consistent format, and consolidate a shipment so it moves as one clean, well-documented order rather than a patchwork of separate purchases. That coordination role does not replace a buyer's own regulatory homework; it simply removes some of the friction of dealing with multiple Thai suppliers and languages directly.
None of this is a substitute for confirming requirements with the relevant authority in the destination country before placing a large order. Import rules for supplements and functional food change, vary by product category, and are enforced differently market to market, so buyers should treat any supplier-provided document as a starting point for their own compliance check, not as proof that a shipment will clear customs on arrival.
