MOQ, Pack Sizes and Lead Times When Sourcing From Thailand

MOQ, or minimum order quantity, is one of the first things that surprises a wholesale buyer building a first container or pallet from Thailand. It is the smallest quantity a brand or supplier will sell in a single order, set well before any enquiry reaches a sourcing partner. Understanding why it exists, and why it changes from product to product, makes the rest of the ordering process much easier to plan.
MOQ is not one number that applies across the board. Each brand sets its own minimum for each SKU, based on how the item is packed at source, how much stock the brand already holds, and how the category behaves commercially. A skincare cream boxed in small batches usually carries a different minimum than a supplement sold in sachets, or a household paper product made and warehoused in bulk. Some items sit in stock already and can be released in smaller quantities; others are only released once an order reaches the brand's own production threshold. Buyers who assume one MOQ applies to every product on their list are usually the ones who end up revising their order the most.
Pack sizes work the same way. Every product has an inner pack, the units bundled together such as a dozen bottles or a case of tubes, and a master carton, the outer box used for palletising and freight. Brands fix these configurations for their own reasons: shelf stability, labelling runs, or how the product is normally distributed domestically. For a buyer, pack size decides how many units fit in a carton, how many cartons fit on a pallet or in a container, and how the total order quantity should be rounded. Ordering in round multiples of the carton pack, rather than an arbitrary total, avoids half-filled cartons and awkward freight math later.
Lead time is where buyers most often underestimate the process, because it is rarely one figure. Some products are already finished and in stock, so they move quickly once an order is confirmed. Others are only produced in batches at the brand's own facility, so an order that falls between production runs waits for the next one. Export paperwork, any certificates a destination market requires (buyers should confirm specifics with their own import authority), and the shipping line's own sailing schedule all add time that has nothing to do with the product itself. A realistic lead time is a chain of separate steps, and the slowest step sets the pace for the whole order.
This matters more when an order mixes several brands, the normal way a first container or pallet gets filled. Few buyers want a full container of one item, so a typical order pulls smaller quantities across skincare, supplements, personal care and household categories from several Thai brands at once. Each brand still has its own MOQ, pack size, and production or stock position. Consolidating all of it into one shipment means checking every SKU against its own minimum and carton spec, then aligning pickup dates so the goods can be brought together, documented and shipped as one consignment rather than several.
The practical approach for a first order is to ask about MOQ and pack size for every SKU before finalising the product list, not after. A workable order is usually built around carton multiples rather than a target unit count, and a written lead time range per line item is worth more than one date applied to the whole order. Expect the fastest-moving item on the list and the slowest one to ship separately, unless waiting for all of them together is a deliberate choice.
This is the coordination work Pimmycool does for international buyers sourcing Thai beauty and FMCG products: confirming MOQ, pack size and lead time with each brand or supplier, consolidating multiple product lines into one shipment, and preparing the export documentation. There is no fixed price list or online checkout for this kind of order, because the details vary by product and quantity. Buyers who send an enquiry with their target product list receive a quote that reflects those specifics rather than a generic estimate.
