Ocean Freight Swings in 2026: What Thai FMCG Buyers Should Plan For

Ocean freight rates out of Asia have been unusually choppy through 2026. Spot quotes on the same lane can move by a wide margin within a matter of weeks, driven by vessel capacity, peak-season demand, and occasional shocks further up the shipping network. For a wholesale buyer pricing out a container of Thai beauty or FMCG goods, that volatility makes the freight line of a landed-cost estimate the least reliable number on the page.
The effect is not even across categories. A pallet of vitamin serums or lightweight cosmetics absorbs a rate swing without much drama, because freight is a small slice of the total value. A pallet of shampoo, liquid detergent, hand wash, or tissue paper is a different story. These are heavy, bulky, and comparatively low in value per kilogram, so freight can be a large share of landed cost, and a rate jump bites much harder into the margin a buyer has planned for.
The practical response is not to chase a guaranteed number, because in this market there usually isn't one. It is to build a buffer into the retail or distribution price before the container leaves Thailand, rather than discovering the gap after the invoice lands. A freight quote is only as good as its validity window; treat any number a forwarder gives as good for the days stated, not as a fixed planning figure for a shipment three months out.
Consolidation helps more in a volatile freight market than in a stable one. Buying from several small Thai suppliers and shipping each order separately multiplies exposure: more bookings, more minimum charges, more exposure to whichever week the rate happens to spike. Combining orders from multiple brands into one container, through a single sourcing and export partner, means the rate swing is absorbed once, on one shipment, instead of several times across several small ones.
Before confirming a purchase order, it is worth asking exactly which Incoterm a quote is based on. FOB, CIF, and DDP put the freight risk in different hands, and a quote that looks cheaper on paper may simply have pushed the ocean-rate exposure onto the buyer rather than removed it. Asking the question upfront costs nothing and avoids a surprise once the container is already booked.
None of this is a prediction of where rates go next. Container pricing has surprised forecasters in both directions this year, and the only reliable source for a current number is a freight forwarder quoting the specific lane and week in question. What a buyer can control is how the sourcing is structured, consolidated or scattered, and how much buffer sits in the pricing before the next swing arrives.
